16 faculty members from the School of Medicine Columbia, School of Medicine Greenville, and the College of Pharmacy have completed the Reflective Teaching Practices for Medical Educators (RTPforME) program. This six-week professional development experience supports educators in strengthening their teaching through reflection, instructional design, and the application of adult learning principles.
Held from May 5 - June 15, the RTPforME program was facilitated by Kristin Harrell, CTE Instructional Designer, and engaged participants in interactive webinars, asynchronous learning modules, one-on-one consultations, and a final teaching project. The cohort model encouraged individualized coaching while offering a shared learning experience focused on effective teaching practices in health professions education.
Participants explored topics such as:
- Applying backward design to course planning
- Incorporating active learning into instruction
- Designing effective assessments and feedback
- Developing instructional materials and teaching strategies
- Reflecting on teaching goals and challenges
Upon completion of the program, participants submitted a final teaching project focused on improving an aspect of their own teaching practice.
The Summer 2025 cohort highlighted several aspects of the program that contributed to their professional growth. One participant shared, “The sessions were planned in a way that was respectful to all of our busy schedules. RTP has been refreshing for me.”
The webinars were frequently noted as a valuable part of the experience. One participant wrote, “I felt like the presentation on active learning techniques was the most useful live session. I appreciated the use of the chat for engaging us and showing some novel modalities.”
Others emphasized how the structure and content supported reflection and instructional development. “The lectures were great and gave a lot of wonderful information to reflect on as I thought about my own learning and learning styles.”
Mentorship was another important element of the program. One participant noted, “Program Mentors were a very useful part of the program. I think they tied the course material to the project well, and they really helped me evaluate my areas for improvement.”
