The Center for Teaching Excellence’s (CTE) mission is to inspire excellence and innovation in teaching.  CTE creates and provides pedagogical support for all who teach at USC whether online or face-to-face, including providing:

  • Best Practice Resources

Division of Information Technology

DoIT supports the teaching, research and public services goals of USC. This Division provides support to faculty whether in the online or face-to-face classroom. DoIT assists both faculty and teaching assistants in finding the best mix of instructional technologies and methods to enhance teaching and learning.

Office of Distributed Learning

The Office of Distributed Learning assists faculty and academic units with scheduling all distributed learning (> 50% online or 100% online) courses, producing online lectures in the Course Production Lab, test proctoring and transcription/closed captioning to meet course accessibility needs. Together, we assist in delivering exceptional online courses to students regardless of distance, classroom availability or time constraints.

Services provided include:

  • Online Course Scheduling
  • Test Proctoring (options for paper and computer-based formats at the Office, through a secure online proctoring service, or at approved on- or off-campus testing sites)
  • Course Production (The Office has two on-site, professional production suites with advanced studio-level and audio equipment, studio lighting, and a photo-ready background to record, edit, and incorporate other media into lectures) 
  • Easy to Search Website of Online Courses Taught Each Semester in various Distributed Learning Formats

On Your Time (OYT) Initiatives

The Office of On Your Time Initiatives (OYT) supports a variety of courses and programs that help students get ahead, catch up, or stay on track for degree completion. Programs located under OYT include Summer Semester, Winter Session, and Accelerated Study Plans. OYT coordinated courses are easily identified as Y sections. In addition, OYT is the:

  • Academic Unit for Undergraduate Non-degree Students
  • Senior Citizens in the Free Tuition Program
  • Approximately 400 Supplemental Courses Per Semester Across 40 Academic Units. 

Our classes are taught in a variety of formats including online, face-to-face, accelerated and full semester.

Palmetto College

USC Palmetto College leverages the resources of the entire University of South Carolina System to offer a flexible, accessible and affordable education for all South Carolinians. Associate degree programs are offered from Palmetto College Campuses and locations including USC Lancaster (Lancaster and Indian Land), USC Salkehatchie (Allendale and Walterboro), USC Sumter (Sumter and Shaw Air Force Base), USC Union (Union and Laurens) and Fort Jackson. More than a dozen bachelor’s degree completion programs are offered completely online to South Carolinians through the four senior USC institutions at USC Aiken, USC Beaufort, USC Columbia and USC Upstate.
