Image Gallery Alt Text

You will need to offer alt text for every image in your gallery because they function as links, and every linked image must have alt text.

Adding & Replacing Alt Text

Consider alt text every time you add and swap out an image.

  1. Select the "Edit" tab, then click "Images" in the left sidebar to jump down to your uploaded images.
    • The edit page. Across the top are four tab options, Preview, Edit surrounded by a garnet rectangle for emphasis, Properties, and Versions. To the right are three more buttons, the first with a box icon and downward error, the second with a yellow lightbulb icon, and the third, a green Publish button with a dropdown arrow. There is also a small gray circle with a white question mark in it next to the Publish button. In a callout, the image gallery title, study abroad, is displayed above two tabs for Gallery Options and Images, which is surrounded by a garnet rectangle. Another callout section Gallery Options has Maximum Thumbnail Size set to 100 W x 100 H, with a blank Thumbnail Preview section, including a gray placeholder square.

  2. Add your alt text to the "Description" box. Click "Save" at the bottom of the page to confirm.
    • The lower section of the edit page. Across the top are four tab options, Preview, Edit, Properties, and Versions. To the right are three more buttons, the first with a box icon and downward error, the second with a yellow lightbulb icon, and the third, a green Publish button with a dropdown arrow. There is also a small gray circle with a white question mark in it next to the Publish button. In a callout, the image gallery title, study abroad, is displayed above two tabs for Gallery Options and Images. Another Images callout section has two image information tiles, one filled out and one blank. The otherwise empty image tile shows an image with a group of students on a study abroad, and four text fields for Title, Description, Caption, and Link, with Description surrounded in a garnet rectangle for emphasis. The tile with information shows another group of students studying abroad, with title HRSM Students in the Shopping Arcades of Milan, Description Group shot of HRSM students posed in the covered streets of a Milan shopping arcade, and caption Where better to learn about fashion than in Milan? This group of HRSM student took some…. The Link field is empty.

Captions & Alt Text

Most of the time, alt text and captions serve very different purposes. However, if your caption conveys all of the visual information found in your image, you can mark the image as decorative to keep a screen reader from reading the same description twice.
