At Carolina Food Co., our mission to serve goes beyond the University of South Carolina; we’re here to enrich and nourish lives throughout the Columbia community as well. We are mindful that 40% of the American food supply is wasted while 41 million Americans struggle with hunger. Since arriving on campus in the summer of 2017, we have united with several organizations that focus on relieving hunger and improving the food system.
Carolina Food Co. partnered with Harvest Hope Food Bank for Aramark Building Community Day in September. 30 volunteers spent the day packing over 3,000 meals into boxes for families struggling with hunger in the Columbia area. Each box had enough food to feed that person for a whole week.
In an effort to reduce waste and feed hungry people in our community, Carolina Food Co. has an ongoing partnership with the Food Recovery Network, a student organization at the University of South Carolina. Our chefs work with students to collect excess food from campus dining halls, restaurants, and catering events. Since August of 2017, we have donated nearly 40,000 lbs. of food to local charities like Oliver Gospel Mission and Transitions Homeless Center. Additionally, we support the Gamecock Pantry, an on-campus food pantry for students who request food assistance.
Carolina Food Co. and Healthy Carolina co-founded the Food Systems Strategy Committee to address healthy and sustainable food policies on campus, as well as food access issues. Furthermore, we’re working with the Columbia Food Policy Committee to promote a healthy and accessible food system in Columbia.
