12 University Departments Selected for Bridge to Faculty Program

Officials at the University of South Carolina have selected 12 departments to participate in the new Bridge to Faculty scholars program. 

The Bridge to Faculty program is designed to increase faculty diversity at South Carolina. The program, also known as B2F, was created last fall and will welcome new scholars Fall 2023 with the goal of them transitioning  them into tenure-track faculty positions after a two-year training period. 

“The Bridge to Faculty Program will help us with our commitment in creating an environment that reflects the students and community we serve,” said Julian R. Williams, vice president, Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. "it is 

The program is just one of the programs and initiatives aimed at recruiting and retaining talented faculty at the state's flagship university.

“We are excited for this program as we believe DEI are essential for our educational and research missions to bring in strong feelings of belonging to the college where everyone is able to achieve their full potential individually and through collaborative efforts,” said Lingyu Yu, Ph.D., associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, College of Engineering and Computing.

Once selected, the program will provide time and resources to allow scholars to establish their research and support their success and potential transition to a tenure-track position.

The Bridge to Faculty program is more than a diversity initiative, it is the intentional pursuit of innovation, genius, and belonging.  Increased diversity leads to increased representation. Increased representation leads to the imagination and realization of untold potential,” said Mylene Culbreath, PhD, vice dean for diversity, equity and inclusion, College of Arts and Sciences. “In short, this program helps to create greater parity between the demographic composition of the university and the communities we serve. “
