International Perspectives on Higher Education

Are you interested in having your own study abroad experience? Would you like to learn more about how education abroad at UofSC works? Consider participating in the International Perspectives on Higher Education (IPHE) program specifically designed for our faculty and staff.

Program Details

*IPHE has been paused for the 2021-2022 academic year.  It is expected to resume in the 2022-2023 academic year.*

International Perspectives on Higher Education (IPHE) is a unique professional development program for UofSC faculty and staff interested in learning more about and becoming involved in international education.  In past years, IPHE cohorts have visited UofSC's international education partners in Ghana (virtual - 2021), Sweden (2020), Colombia (2019), Vietnam (2018), South Africa (2017), Costa Rica (2016), Ireland (2015), Italy (2014), and  Spain/France (2013).

Participants gain an understanding of education practices between UofSC and our international partner institutions and have opportunities to connect with counterparts at UofSC's international partner institutions. Participants also apply their expanded perspectives toward a Global Competency Aptitude Assessment at the beginning and end of the program.

Upon returning, all IPHE participants are responsible for completing a follow-on project to implement and share the knowledge gained during the program. Examples could include developing a short-term faculty-led course, engaging in departmental curriculum integration, conducting a presentation on the IPHE outcomes for campus colleagues, or writing a campus news article about IPHE.

Faculty and staff in Sweden

UofSC faculty and staff arrive in Sweden on the 8th annual IPHE program from 2020.

All UofSC faculty and staff who have received their supervisor's support are eligible to participate. We will select a small group of non-UofSC faculty and staff from around the Columbia area, as well (for a program fee of $50). The following individuals are strongly encouraged to apply:

  • Staff and faculty who have never been outside of the U.S., or have very limited experience out of the country.
  • Faculty who may be interested in developing a Global Classroom or Global Learning Experience.
  • Staff from student affairs or academic units whose work directly supports the Center for Integrative & Experiential Learning (CIEL).
  • Faculty from academic departments that are underrepresented in education abroad at UofSC.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
