Program Description:
During this study abroad maymester course we will travel to three Irish cities to learn about three medical ethics topics from an Irish perspective. In Dublin we will learn about this history and ethics of abortion in Ireland. We will talk with Professor Jo Murphy-Lawless at Trinity College Dublin. Murphy-Lawless is a sociologist who specializes in childbirth and motherhood in Ireland. We will explore the social and cultural aspects of Ireland that created the conditions of the abortion laws and it's most recent referendum by visiting the site of a mother-baby home, Christ Church Cathedral and Kilmainham Gaol. We will then travel to Cork where we will focus on how Ireland organizes access to healthcare. We will visit a local GP office in Kinsale and talk to a local doctor, we will also have a discussion with Professor John Browne at University College Cork. Browne is a public health professor specializing in Irish health services. Finally we will travel to Galway where we will focus on end-of-life care and medical aid in dying. We will meet Dr. Louise Campbell at NUI Galway. Campbell is a clinical ethicist who has provided testimony on end of life care to the Oireachtas. Students will have time to explore Connemara National Park and it's rural surroundings to contextualize the rural nature of Irish life which shapes the moral values of Ireland.
