Program Description:
This program offers a unique study abroad opportunity for students interested in sport medicine and sports science. Students will delve into the global sport and health industry, gaining insights into the critical role of sport in Irish society from social, political, cultural, and religious perspectives. We spend a lot of time studying Gaelic culture and traditional Irish sports such as Gaelic football, hurling, rugby and camogie and their influence on the Western World. The purpose of this program is to provide students with learning opportunities in sports medicine, history, and culture as it pertains to the people and athletes of Ireland. Educational activities include lecture series with nationally and internationally renowned medical professionals in the field of sports science, sports medicine, orthopedics, physical therapy, health care and physiotherapy. Speakers include Charlie Higgins, the Head of Athletic Performance and Dr. John Ryan, the Head Physician for Leinster Rugby Club. The program also includes lectures from faculty from Dublin City University, including Dr. Siobhan O’Conner, Dr. Enda Whyte, and Dr. Kate Sheridan who are all experts in different disciplines within Irish Sports Medicine. Dr. O’Conner is the current VP of the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy. Dr. Mensch has collaborated with faculty from DCU on different research projects in the past. The program also includes an applied lab experience with DCU’s Exoskeleton. The Exoskeleton is a state-of-the-art wearable robotic device that improves and reinforces walking for a patient that has lower limb (leg) weakness or paralysis. Most students on this program will be interested in attending physical therapy, medical, or athletic training school, so this program is a perfect fit for helping them network and prepare for their graduate program goals.
