Program Description:
Modern society is fascinated with sports, and nowhere is that more evident than in Australia where some say that sports is their "National Religion". In addition, Australia has been awarded the 2032 Olympic games for just the third time which has increased a passion for discussing sports and sports medicine across the country in preparation for the games. The purpose of this program is to provide students with learning opportunities in sports medicine, history, and culture as it pertains to the people and athletes of Australia. Educational activities include lecture series with nationally and internationally renowned medical professionals in the field of sports science, sports medicine, orthopedics, health care and physiotherapy. Speakers include Rob Mullard the Lead Performance Support Manager / Lead Physiotherapist for the Australian World U20 Athletics Development Team, Stephen Byrd the lead high-performance manager for various Australian and New Zealand Olympic teams and committee member for the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games Engagement, Natasha Melacrinis a former Olympian for Australia in Gymnastics and current Physiotherapist researching exercise oncology, Glen Deakin a professor in exercise physiology and expert in heat and hydration and performing field-based research in Aboriginal communities, as well lectures and facility visits with the high performance managers, sports physiotherapists and strength and conditioning specialists for the Cronulla Sharks Rugby League Football Club and the Sydney Swans of the AFL.
