This program will allow students to learn about Italy and above all experience contemporary Italy in a beautiful area, like Sicily, which is still not targeted from Anglophone tourism and study abroad students like Florence, Venice, and Rome. Students experience the city of Palermo as well as the atmosphere of Villabate, a small Sicilian town located only 25 minutes away by private bus. The juxtaposition of these two towns provides students with a cultural awaresness of contemporary Italy, and specifically Sicily, as well as a historical perspective through the lens of a small, Italian town and a city. The history and atmosphere of Villabate make it an ideal location for a U of SC Study Abroad program. Students will be able to experience first-hand what they have previously seen in popular Italian films such as The Godfather, Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, I Cento Passi, and others.
