About this Fellowship

Supports PhD students and their faculty thesis advisors in advancing cutting-edge research and fostering inclusive scientific training environments, while supporting the transition to postdoctoral scientist.

The HHMI Gilliam Fellows Program is an early career initiative that supports PhD students and their faculty advisors as they pursue ambitious science and build inclusive training environments. The program is unique in supporting both graduate students and their faculty PhD advisors as mentor-mentee pairs.

Fellows are typically in the second or third year of their PhD studies and must be enrolled in biomedical or life sciences programs. They create projects that engage their communities in science and promote healthier and inclusive training environments. Gilliam PhD Fellows interested in pursuing an academic research career may apply for four additional years of postdoctoral support as Gilliam Postdoc Fellows. Advisors can participate in a mentorship skills development course to enhance their mentorship capabilities.

Deadlines are typically in early December. Refer to the program website for details and exact dates.
