Boren Undergraduate Scholarship
Goes By: Boren Scholarship
Fellowship Website
Supports undergraduate students seeking to study a less-commonly taught language abroad in a non-English speaking country (outside of Western Europe).
Strong preference is given for programs of 6 months or longer; students may combine a summer with a semester abroad to reach this 6 month threshold.
Applicants must explain how their language and study relate to issues of National Security, broadly defined. Scholars are also required to fulfill a service requirement of one year of employment with a federal agency, following their graduation.
Please note: Students applying for the Boren must also complete the USC Study Abroad Application due to the Study Abroad Office. The deadline for doing so is March 1 (Feb 15 for programs that begin in the summer) for fall or academic year programs. If your program begins the following spring, you must meet their Oct. 1 deadline in the year you will be studying abroad. See link to Forms and Applications at sc.edu/studyabroad
Award Value
Up to $10,000 for a semester and up to $20,000 for a full academic year.
Special summer program for STEM students: up to $8,000 for a minimum 8-week program.
