Financial Statement Analysis

This course is designed for the student to analyze financial statements and glean information for use in issuing debt or equity investments. The course will rely heavily on Excel and the usage of financial statements from publicly traded companies to demonstrate real world examples that financial analysts encounter.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Analyze a financial statement to derive insights into the health of a company
  • Analyze the statements made by management to understand get a sense as to what information beyond the financial statements might be of import
  • Analyze the financing, investing, and operating activities of a firm to derive value-relevant insights into the firm’s cash flows
  • Assess the firm’s profitability and riskiness of cash flows as it applies not only to valuation but also a credit assessment
  • Analyze the importance of different segments within a firm and assess the value of those segments
