Sustainable Living at Carolina

Living a more sustainable lifestyle at the University of South Carolina is a simple process and can be attained by following easy steps.

Live Green

Take Advantage of Campus Transportation

Our urban campus can make walking seem like a daunting task. Don’t sweat it! Take advantage of our campus shuttle system—this service runs throughout the week and can take you across campus!  UofSC also has large sidewalks that make it easy to ride a bike across campus.

Buy Reusable Products

Purchasing a reusable cup or bag are a great way to reduce the use of single-use plastic cups and bags on campus. The University Bookstore, has a large collection of UofSC themed reusable mugs, cups, and bags for purchase.

Invest in a Green To-Go Box

Carolina Food Company offers green to-go boxes that you can use anywhere on campus. This cost-efficient box is reusable and eliminates the need for the single-use to-go boxes that other dining locations also offer.

Buy Local

Visit the Farmers Market on Greene Street every Tuesday from 11a.m. - 1p.m. Buying local is a good way to eliminate transportation emissions and costs.

Skip the Straw

Skip the straw. Straw fibers are too small to be useful if recycled and, as a result, end up in landfills. While on-campus, consider purchasing reusable straws from Carolina Food Company.

Conserve Energy & Water

Shut off lights, unplug electronics, turning water off while brushing your teeth, as well as cutting back on shower time, are just a few examples of other ways to reduce your impact on the environment.

Recycle on Campus & in Your Room

The University of South Carolina is proud to have multiple recycling stations and bins spread throughout campus. Sorting areas are located on the main floor of residence hall, kitchen area, or in your building’s trash rooms.

Join Organizations Related to the Environment & Sustainabiltiy

Check out the University’s online resource for campus events and organizations, Garnet Gate. If you’d like to teach your peers about sustainable living while receiving leadership training and Graduation with Leadership Distinction experience, you can also apply to be a campus EcoRep.
