Educational Leave

Just as it is true with our student population, we also encourage our employees to become lifelong learners, continuing to grow both personally and professionally during their tenure with the University of South Carolina and beyond.

University employees in full-time equivalent (FTE) positions are eligible to receive educational leave which provides you the opportunity to further your education and introduce you to new skill sets that will position you for advancement or allow you to cross over into new career opportunities.

To request educational leave, please submit a letter of request to your supervisor for approval.

Employees are encouraged to schedule classes during off-duty hours whenever possible. If classes cannot be scheduled during off-duty hours, your department may choose to adjust your work schedule as long as it will not interfere with the normal operation of the department.

If your work schedule cannot be adjusted, check with your department chair or director for approval to take annual leave or leave without pay in order to attend classes.

Please note that educational leave does not affect sabbatical leave for teaching personnel and officials of academic rank. Employees should always obtain supervisory approval before taking any time away from work. All leave must be reported through the University’s time and attendance management system (iTAMS) or other applicable time recording systemFor more information about entering time, or for additional details about educational leave, please visit the Policies and Procedures section of this site.
