Background

Dr. Cheryl L. Addy has served in the Office of the Provost since August 2016.  Currently, her primary areas of responsibility include faculty affairs; policies and procedures; and institutional research, assessment and analytics.  

As dean of faculty, Dr. Addy is responsible for coordinating and advancing the interests of faculty, including recruitment, appointment, evaluation, promotion and tenure activities; leadership training and other professional development; developing and implementing family friendly and other academic affairs policies; appointment and reappointment reviews of endowed chairs; dean reviews; faculty awards; and SEC academic initiatives. She is responsible for maintaining the university system Policies and Procedures Manual, facilitating review and revision of policies across administrative divisions and the system institutions. The Office of Institutional Research, Assessment and Analytics includes the university’s SACSCOC accreditation, ongoing assessment activities for academic programs, and external reporting to the state Commission on Higher Education, IPEDS, and various ranking organizations; the office also supports numerous institutional dashboards, including enrollment reports and strategic planning.  She also supervises the information resources and academic programs for the Office of the Provost and chairs the university commencement committee. Until December 2020, she also served as dean of the Graduate School.  

Dr. Addy has spent her entire academic career at the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining the Office of the Provost, she served the Arnold School of Public Health in a variety of administrative roles, beginning as department chair in 1994 and culminating as senior associate dean with responsibility for faculty affairs, student affairs, curriculum development, academic assessment and evaluation, and general school administration.  In addition to leading the school’s accreditation reviews, she served on numerous site visits for the Council on Education for Public Health. Dr. Addy received her B.S., magna cum laude, in mathematics from Furman University.  She received her M.S. (1985) and Ph.D. (1988) in biostatistics from Emory University.  Her scholarship focused on methodologic and analytic support for research in psychiatric epidemiology, complex sampling designs, and physical activity epidemiology.
