Reporting Requirements While on STEM OPT

During your STEM OPT period, you must submit periodic updates and evaluations to your International Advisor/Designated School Official (DSO). It’s your responsibility to stay on top of these requirements.

Reporting Schedule and Requirements

  1. Confirm that your SEVP Portal information is correct.
  2. Complete the STEM OPT Reporting Form
    • If nothing has changed (address or employment), select the option confirming no changes.
    • If there are changes, note them on the update form. Any material changes require a new Form I-983.
  1. Confirm data accuracy in the SEVP Portal.
  2. Complete the “Evaluation of Student Progress” section of Form I-983 (top half of page 5) and have your employer sign it.
  3. Submit the STEM OPT Reporting Form, attaching the I-983 evaluation.
  1. Verify your information in the SEVP Portal.
  2. Complete the STEM OPT Reporting Form.
    • If there are changes, note them; if none, indicate no change.
    • No new Form I-983 evaluation is required at this time.
  1. Complete the Final Evaluation of Student Progress section of Form I-983 (bottom half of page 5), signed by your employer.
  2. Submit the STEM OPT Reporting Form, attaching the I-983 final evaluation.

Changes

  • Any change in employment (termination, switching jobs) must be reported within 10 days using the STEM OPT Reporting Form
  • When ending employment: submit the final evaluation of your previous employment (bottom half of Form I-983) via the reporting form within 10 days.
  • When beginning a new job: submit a new Form I-983 (employer + student portions) within 10 days of the new employment through the reporting form.
  • If timing allows, you may submit one reporting form to cover both ending one job and starting another, with the evaluations attached.

According to Study in the States, material changes that require a new Form I-983 include (but are not limited to):

  • Change in employer’s EIN
  • Reduction in salary not tied directly to fewer hours
  • Significant reduction in weekly hours in the STEM training position
  • Changes in learning objectives or employer commitments from what was agreed in the original I-983

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
