Columbia, SC- The University of South Carolina’s International Education Week (IEW) will take place November 11-15, 2019. This week is dedicated to promoting cultural awareness while inspiring students to learn more about the many nationalities represented at UofSC. The calendar of activities this year includes the annual International Festival on Greene Street, the 6th Annual World Cup soccer tournament, a ‘Black and Abroad’ seminar, a Dance Extravaganza, and more!
“IEW is a celebration of the Global Gamecock community. UofSC has a wealth of diversity and I hope students, faculty, and staff will take advantage of the experiences offered during this week, both to learn from their peers but also to take time for cultural self-discovery,” said Julie Medlin, Internationalization Programming Coordinator. “I believe learning about other cultures and practices can teach us about ourselves.”
The International Festival is the biggest event of IEW and attracts hundreds of students to learn about the world beyond the Horseshoe. Students attending the festival can interact with internationals from Europe, Asia, Latin & South America, Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. Included in the festival are some of the University’s international student organizations such as the Thai Student Association, International Student Association, Pan African Student Association, and campus partners such as the U.S. Peace Corps and Confucius Institute. Registration for tabling at event is now open.
This festival, which is the final event in a week of international programming, is the perfect opportunity for students to try delicious food, watch a cultural dance performance, listen to international music, learn about opportunities to travel abroad, and practice their foreign language skills.
International Education Week is part of a joint initiative between the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education to promote international exchange worldwide. The UofSC community joined this global initiative in 2004.
