At Orientation

Find out a little more about what you can expect during your Fall Freshman Orientation.

For Freshmen

A high school graduate who is entering a post-secondary institution for the first time is considered a freshman student.

At Orientation You Will:

  • meet other new students, faculty, and staff.
  • learn about living at UofSC and become familiar with campus.
  • be introduced to  your academic program and degree requirements.
  • have an advising session where you register for classes.
  • pick up your CarolinaCard.

What You Should Know

Orientation starts at Patterson Hall, right across the street from the Bull Street Garage, beginning at 8 a.m. At check-in you will:

  • Receive your Orientation materials, including your name tag, schedule, Garnet Guide and bag.
  • Check-into your overnight accommodations.
  • Review your advising holds (Immunizations, Citizenship and Residency, if applicable).
  • Enjoy a light continental breakfast.
  • Pick-up your CarolinaCard.
  • Load shuttles to the Orientation Program start.

Park in Gate 2 of Bull Street Garage. Please print and display your parking decal on your dashboard, which will be sent via email at least 48 hours prior to your Orientation Session. For your convenience, there are garnet directional signs located around campus to help guide you to Bull Street Garage.

The first day of orientation includes night time programming. Orientation usually lasts until 5 p.m. on the second day, so please plan accordingly. Your full participation is required at all sessions.

Staying Overnight

All students are required to stay overnight in an assigned residence hall after the first day of orientation. Roommate assignments will be random. Basic linens are provided by our Conference Services department, including sheets, a blanket, a pillow and a towel. These will be in your room upon checking in.

  • Pre-Event Accommodations
If you selected to spend the night on campus prior to orientation (pre-event accommodations), students will report to Sims Hall and families will report to Patterson Hall for room check-in anytime after 2 p.m. Call 803-777-6636 if you need to make special arrangements for an earlier check-in. The parking pass for the Bull Street Garage that you received in the email regarding Orientation will also be valid for the night before the date listed on the pass. Please park in Gate 2 of the Bull Street Garage.

Carolina Food Co. will provide meals throughout orientation. You will only need to plan your meals if you are arriving the day before or staying after.

  • Food Restrictions
Please make us aware of allergies and dietary restrictions in the "Special Accommodations" section of the reservation form so we can have appropriate meals available for you.

Advising and Registration

Make sure to bring your completed advising worksheet. Students will meet with an advisor that corresponds with their major during orientation to help them plan their class schedule and register for classes.

Parents and guests are encouraged to help their student review degree requirements prior to coming to orientation; however, only students attend advising sessions during orientation.

Challenge the conventional. Create the exceptional. No Limits.
