Before You Arrive

Start preparing for your Summer Term Orientation by taking care of the preliminary details.

For Freshmen and Transfer Students

Any student starting at the University of South Carolina during the summer semester is included in this session.  

Planning for Orientation

There are some things you will need to do ahead of time to make sure you are able to register for classes and fully participate in orientation activities.

  1. Complete your Checklist for New Freshmen.
    You can locate the checklist and track your progress in Self Service Carolina. If you are a transfer student, this is not a needed.

  2. Complete your advising homework.
    Watch the Pre-Orientation Advising Module  (Freshman students only) and complete your Advising Worksheet (freshman and transfer students). 

  3. Take your math placement test online.
    Your math placement test should be taken at least two weeks prior to your orientation session.

  4. Register to take your foreign language placement test.
    You'll take your foreign language placement test the day before your orientation.

  5. Submit residency, citizenship and immunization records. 
    It is crucial that you submit your residency information, citizenship verification and immunization records prior to orientation to prevent holds on your account during the registration process.

  6. Request your CarolinaCard, your official university ID, online.
    To receive your CarolinaCard complete the Cardholder Agreement and upload your photo 72 hours prior to Orientation. If your photo is accepted, the CarolinaCard Office will send a confirmation email.

 

What to have ready

  • VIP ID and Password

    You will use this throughout orientation, so please plan to memorize it or write it down in advance of your session.

  • Transcripts and Records
    Including AP/IB scores, high school transcripts, immunization records, your advising worksheet and any other relative correspondence.

  • Completed Advising Worksheet »
    You will need this to register for classes. 

  • Appropriate Technology and Internet Access
    In order to participate in virtual Orientation, you will need to have appropriate technology such as a laptop, desktop, tablet or mobile device. It is strongly encourage that you utilize a laptop or desktop for your Day of Orientation. Additionally, you will need access to a high-speed Internet connection. If you are unable to access one or both of these, please let us know in the accommodations sections of your Orientation Reservation Portal.
