Academic Priorities

Carolina Core

All University of South Carolina undergraduates share a common academic foundation: the Carolina Core. These first courses in the liberal arts and sciences support subsequent study in the program major and in beyond-the-classroom learning activities. Carolina Core develops competency in communication, analytical reasoning and problem-solving, scientific literacy, information literacy and the arts. Students also explore topics in global citizenship and multicultural understanding as well as values, ethics and social responsibility.

Students may choose from a wide variety of Carolina Core courses with new options being added every year. Students should work closely with their advisers to choose Carolina Core courses that fit best with their majors to ensure timely degree completion.
