First Year Reading Experience

The Poster

As part of the First-Year Reading Experience program, students enrolled in a senior level graphic design class participate in a contest where they create a design that illustrates the themes of the book. The winning design is used to promote the First-Year Reading Experience to the UofSC community in print and digital communications.

The 2018 selection design was awarded to Lindsey Lane, a 2018 alumna of UofSC. Lane earned her undergraduate degree from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, with an emphasis in Visual Communications in May 2017 and an M.A. from the School of Visual Art and Design in May 2018.

Lane's Design Concept

“The concept of this design is to reflect on the art of asking questions. In the book, A More Beautiful Question, Warren Berger notes that children ask the most questions, and when we grow up we are either discouraged to ask questions or we revert to just looking up the answer.

The imagery on my design is the illustration of many raised hands, and the raising of hands alludes to asking questions and not being afraid to ask questions —whether that be in the classroom or everyday life. Throughout the book, Berger tells stories of successful people who have asked "why" and "why not?" The goal of my illustration was to provoke thought and commend a deeper level of thinking to develop questions.”
