Faculty Principal of Preston Residential College

The University of South Carolina announces the search for the resident Faculty Principal of Preston Residential College, the University’s oldest residential college. This position is expected to be filled by a full-time tenure-track or professional-track faculty member at the UofSC Columbia campus with a starting date in May 2022. The position reports to both the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies and the Associate Vice President of Student Housing and Sustainability and serves at the pleasure of the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. 

The faculty principal, with the active support of student residents, resident mentors, University Housing, and faculty associates of Preston Residential College from a broad spectrum of disciplines, will lead President Residential College’s programs.  Preston Residential College (across Greene Street from the Russell House University Union) houses 230 undergraduates and the faculty principal’s family. Preston Residential College is a living-learning environment designed to enhance, both academically and culturally, the university experience of its residents.

The faculty principal is the chief academic administrator and subscribes to Preston Residential College’s four pillars: passion, community, knowledge, and responsibility.  Our goal is to develop leaders who have a strong sense of civic responsibility and an understanding of the community at Carolina and beyond. The faculty principal’s duties include promoting intellectual exchange, leadership development, cultural diversity, civic engagement, and artistic expression; promoting collegiality among faculty and students; and interacting with the Executive Director of University Housing and with other university officials.

The ideal candidate for Preston Residential College Faculty Principal will:

  • Have an undergraduate teaching and scholarly record of distinction in any academic area 
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education and mentoring 
  • Have an appreciation of students from diverse backgrounds and with diverse interests
  • Mentor Preston students from all academic levels and a variety of schools and colleges to enhance their engagement opportunities on campus. 
  • Demonstrate administrative, organizational, and supervisory skills 
  • Additionally, the faculty principal must live in the Preston Residential College Faculty Lodge (and if applicable, partners/children/family members) - animals welcome!

The Faculty Principal will be appointed for a three-year term. As compensation, the Faculty Principal will receive an appropriate salary supplement; release from certain teaching duties; residential quarters in the Principal’s Lodge (three bedroom, two-and-a-half bath, 2,100 square feet) with reserved parking privileges; financial support for meals; and an incidentals budget. The successful candidate must pass a criminal background check. These issues and others will be negotiated with the Provost. The appointment is expected to begin May 15, 2022.
