The search for the position of Dean of University Libraries at the University of South Carolina-Columbia is underway. The Library provides outreach to the university community and to our city, state, and region through programs that include the Scholar's Corner, Fall Literary Festival, fall and spring dinners, Russell Lecture, South Caroliniana luncheon, tours of the Horseshoe and Open Gallery events in the Hollings Library. In addition to providing an innovative cultural hub for the Carolina community, University Libraries works to curate a diverse set of collections for research and discovery. Recent notable acquisitions include the 1920-1936 Richard Samuel Roberts collection of approximately 3,500 glass plate negatives that document Columbia’s African American community; John and Margaret Downs KISS Collection of the rock band’s memorabilia; Gordon (Dick) Goodwin Collection of letters, drill, photographs, and music scores from the Carolina Bands; John Milton's 1637 poem Lycidas; additions to the Richard Greener Papers, the Women’s History Oral History Collection, the Marine Corps Archives, and the papers of Congressman James Clyburn. The Library boasts six locations including the Thomas Cooper Library, the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, the Moving Image Research Collections, Music Library, South Caroliniana Library (renovations set to complete spring 2022), and the USC Library.
Three finalists have been selected for the position of dean of University Libraries. Campus interviews with university leadership, faculty, staff and students will take place on the below dates. During the visits, the candidates will give a presentation titled "The Path Forward: Opportunity, Innovation and Impact." The presentations will be held in the Hollings Program Room in the Thomas Cooper Library and available on Teams Live. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend and provide feedback to the search committee.
