Research cores at the University of South Carolina are fee-based, shared research resources that provide access to equipment, instruments, technology and specialized expertise. These services and facilities are available to researchers from any part of the university or from other organizations. The Office of the Vice President for Research (VPR) is excited to showcase the university’s core facilities through a new USC Research Cores website, which serves as a one-stop shop for information on core facilities across the university.
Traditionally, research cores at USC have been managed by individual laboratories or by the department, college or school in which the core is housed. Many of the cores highlighted on the new website continue to work this way, but seven of USC’s research cores are now centralized under the Office of the Vice President for Research’s Office of Research Facilities and Infrastructure. This ongoing effort empowers centralized cores to maintain, replace and upgrade key instrumentation efficiently, hire core staff to support clients and minimize time spent on administrative tasks like scheduling and billing.
“It’s exciting to see this new website come to fruition,” said Lumi Bakos, Associate Vice President for Research Operations. “It really shows how much progress the Office of Research Facilities and Infrastructure Team has made in a very short time by centralizing seven cores, implementing iLab for scheduling and ordering, and working with all of the university’s cores to identify and order new equipment our researchers need to innovate. Congratulations to the team on this important milestone.”
