UofSC Study Abroad Scholarships & Grants

All awards can be applied for by scrolling to the bottom of the page to the "Apply For Scholarships" section, and selecting which scholarship you would like to begin applying for. The only exception is the Aruba Erasmus Grant, which students must apply for by contacting the Study Abroad Office directly.

The terms during which each award is available are listed along with the scholarship names. Please note that awards listed as available for semester programs likely can be used for academic year programs as well.

What the scholarship is for: Students applying to the following programs are eligible for the Affiliate Scholarship, which typically amounts to a $500 award but can vary.  Eligible Global Partner programs include:

  • API 
  • ASA (excluding summer programs and Griffith College-Dublin program)
  • Arcadia 
  • CIEE Open Campus Programs (Open Campus Grant- fall and spring only)
  • SAI (limited to HRSM majors)
  • USAC 

Deadline: The Global Partner Program Affiliate Scholarship Application and Financial Plan must be submitted online to the Study Abroad Office on October 5 for Spring programs and March 5 for Summer/Fall/Academic Year programs.

Eligibility for scholarship: In order to be considered for Global Partner Program Affiliate Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Have applied to one of the above affiliate programs (proof of acceptance must be provided to the Study Abroad Office before funds are released).
  • Be a full time, undergraduate USC student
  • Be earning credit for his/her education abroad experience
  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum 2.5 GPA

How to apply: 

  • Complete all required steps and submit application online
  • Upload your unofficial academic transcript

The following programs have automatic discounts or benefits for UofSC students:

AIFS – UofSC students going on an AIFS semester program automatically receive an AIFS Program Grant of $250.

ASA - UofSC students receive an automatic discounted price on the Dublin, Ireland Griffith College program for any UofSC student.  

CEA - UofSC students will receive the following benefits:

  • Year or semester students will receive a $600 grant. (Does not include Prague.)
  • Summer students will receive a $300 grant. (Does not include Prague.)
  • Full curriculum Anglo-American University in Prague students will receive an automatic $1800 discount for fall or spring semesters.
  • Students can often obtain a travel or study abroad voucher/grant using a promotional code at the time of application to CEA. These vary in amount, type, and term of use (determined by CEA), but have been as high as $1,000 for a semester program. When applying to CEA, students should visit the Grant & Vouchers page of CEA's website for the latest information, deadlines, and promo codes. (Students studying in the spring or fall semester in Prague may not use these travel or study abroad voucher/grants in conjunction with the $1800 discount.)
  • UofSC students are also considered for additional higher-level CEA awards.

CISabroad– UofSC students automatically receive a $250 discount per semester program or $100 per summer program.  Capstone and Honors College Students applying to the Perugia, Italy program are eligible to compete for an additional $1,000 scholarship (please see a study abroad advisor for more information).

IES Abroad - UofSC students automatically receive a $2,000 discount on IES semester programs.

IFSA - UofSC students automatically receive a $2,000 discount on IFSA semester programs.

SAI – UofSC students will receive the following benefits depending on which program they enroll in:

  • SEMESTER
    • Automatic $300 discount for students attending John Cabot University and American University of Paris
    • Automatic $1,000 discount for students in the Florence University of the Arts
    • Automatic $600 discount for students attending all other SAI schools
  • SUMMER
    • Automatic $100 discount for students attending John Cabot University and American University of Paris
    • Automatic $250 discount for students attending all other SAI schools
    • Automatic $300 discount for students attending Florence University of the Arts

TEAN - UofSC students will receive the following benefits:

  • Automatic discount of $200 per summer program or $300 per semester program
  • Automatic discount of $2000 per semester program to all first-generation college students and students of color

What the grant is for: The Aruba Erasmus Grant is a semester stipend and travel allowance of up to $3600 to be used to help fund a semester or academic year experience at the University of Aruba. The goal of this grant is to help provide a study abroad experience for students interested in studying in Aruba. All UofSC students participating in the Aruba exchange for the semester or academic year will be automatically considered for this award. The number of grants available varies from year to year.

Deadline: Students must apply for the Aruba Global Exchange  by the posted deadline, prior to the term they plan to study abroad. There is not a separate scholarship application. They may apply for the award multiple terms; however can only receive the award once. Students cannot delay or defer the award; it must be used for the term listed on their application. The award must be used for the University of Aruba Global Exchange Program.

Eligibility for scholarship: In order to be considered for an Aruba Erasmus Grant, an applicant must:

  • Be in the process of applying or have already applied to the University of Aruba Global Exchange for a semester or academic year program

  • Be a full time, undergraduate, degree-seeking UofSC student

  • Be earning at least twelve credits for his/her study abroad experience

  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum 2.75 GPA

  • Submit completed application materials to the Study Abroad Office by the posted deadline

Grant Disbursement: You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline. The actual grant funds are disbursed upon arrival in Aruba by University of Aruba staff.

How to apply: Candidates will be evaluated based on the quality of their Global Exchange applications. No other separate application materials are needed.

**Note this award will not be offered for the 2020-2021 academic year**

What the award is for: The Beyond Boundaries Award is a financial award of $1500 or more to be used to help fund a credit-bearing Maymester/summer education abroad experience. The goal of this award is to help students with high financial need make an overseas experience possible.  The number of awards available varies from year to year.

Deadline: You must apply by November 15th, prior to the Maymester/summer term you plan to study abroad. You may apply for the award multiple times; however you can only receive the award once. You cannot delay or defer the award.  It must be used for the Maymester/summer listed on your application. The award must be used for the specific program outlined in your application. Please note that recipients of the Passport Travel Grant cannot also receive the Beyond Boundaries Award.

Student eligibility requirements: In order to be considered for a Beyond Boundaries Award, an applicant must

  • Demonstrate significant financial need
  • Be in the process of applying or have already applied to an approved Maymester/summer program (proof of acceptance must be provided to the Study Abroad Office before funds are released)
  • Be a full-time, undergraduate, degree-seeking USC-Columbia student
  • Be earning at least 3 credits for his/her education abroad experience
  • Be in good academic standing

Other factors considered within the application essay will be traditionally underrepresented students, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • students from diverse ethnic backgrounds
  • students with disabilities
  • first-generation students (those whose parents have not obtained a college degree)
  • students in fields of study underrepresented in study abroad (ex. STEM, Education, Nursing, Music, Psychology, Exercise Science, etc.)

Education abroad program requirements: The following types of programs meet requirements for the purpose of applying for a Beyond Boundaries Award:

  • UofSC Global Classroom Programs
  • UofSC Global Direct Summer Programs
  • Global Partner Programs
  • Education abroad programs sponsored by another university
  • Direct enrollment in an approved foreign institution

Independent study or independent research activities abroad do not meet the scholarship eligibility requirements.

Award disbursement: You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline.  The actual award funds are disbursed at the start of Summer I or Summer II, depending on your program dates.  In order to access the funds, you will need to apply the award to your student account.  

If you are taking part in a UofSC Global Classroom Program, the award will be applied toward your tuition costs.  Any remainder will be issued to you in the form of an overage check.  If you are taking part in a Global Direct Summer or Global Partner Program, an overage check will be issued to you after funds have been applied to any outstanding balance you may have on your account.  The overage check will be sent to your permanent address. Please note that you are responsible for submitting the T-1 form to the Financial Aid Office and for covering any deposits or payments due before the disbursement of the award.

Follow-on service project requirement: To help expand the impact of the Beyond Boundaries Award and promote education abroad among traditionally underrepresented students, all recipients will be required to participate in a follow-on service project upon their return from abroad. This service requirement may include presentations to student groups or organizations or participation in scheduled study abroad events specifically targeting underrepresented students. Details will be finalized in conjunction with the award recipients at the beginning of the fall semester following the summer during which recipients will have studied abroad.

How to apply: Your application will be evaluated based on the quality of your level of financial need. Indicators of financial need may include federal and state need-based grants and loans.

What the award is for: The Carolina Global Study Award is a financial award of $500-$2000, partially funded by Global Partner Providers American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS) and International Studies Abroad (ISA), to be used to help fund a semester, academic year, or summer study abroad experience. The goal of this award is to help provide a study abroad experience for students with financial need. All UofSC students participating in semester, academic year, or summer programs are eligible to compete for this award. The number of awards available varies from year to year.

Deadline: The Carolina Global Study Award Application must be submitted online by October 15 for Spring programs and March 15 for Summer/Fall/Academic Year programs. You must apply by the posted deadline, prior to the term you plan to study abroad. You may apply for the award multiple terms; however you can only receive the award once. You cannot delay or defer the award; it must be used for the term listed on your application. The award must be used for the specific program outlined in your application.

Student eligibility requirements: In order to be considered for a Carolina Global Study Award, an applicant must:

  • Be in the process of applying or have already applied to an approved semester, academic year, or summer study abroad program (proof of acceptance must be provided to the Study Abroad Office before funds are released).
  • Be a full time, undergraduate, degree-seeking UofSC student
  • Be earning 3-12 credits for his/her study abroad experience
  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum 2.75 GPA
  • Demonstrate financial need

Study abroad program requirements: The following types of programs meet requirements for the purpose of applying for a Carolina Global Study Award:

  • Global Exchange Program
  • Global Direct Program
  • Global Classroom Program
  • Global UofSC Program
  • Global Partner Program

Independent study or independent research activities abroad do not meet the award eligibility requirements.

At the end of your program, you will be required to submit 3-4 high quality photos from your study abroad experience to the Study Abroad Office. Guidelines will be provided to all scholarship recipients. 

Award disbursement: You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline. The actual award funds are disbursed at the start of UofSC's Fall, Spring, or Summer term. In order to access the funds, you will need to go to VIP and apply the award to your student account.

If you are taking part in a Global Exchange, Global Classroom, or Global UofSC Program, the award will be applied toward your tuition costs. Any remainder will be issued to you in the form of an overage check. If you are taking part in a Global Direct or Partner Program, an overage check will be issued to you after funds have been applied to any outstanding balance you may have on your account. The overage check will be sent to your permanent address. Please note that you are responsible for submitting the T-2 form to the Financial Aid Office and for covering any deposits or payments due before the disbursement of the award.

How to apply: 

Your application will be evaluated based on the quality of your Statement of Purpose. Below is a checklist of requirements for the Carolina Global Study Award application:

  • Complete all required steps and submit application online

What the grant is for: The Grant is a financial award of $2500 to be used to help fund a study abroad experience or research travel in Israel for five undergraduate or graduate students who have an established interest in Jewish Studies. Undergraduate students who are not eligible to receive a Summer Study Abroad Fellowship or compete for a Passport Travel Grant are eligible to compete for this award.

Deadline: You must apply by February 1, prior to the term you plan to study or conduct research in Israel. You can apply for the award multiple times; however you can only receive the award once. You cannot delay the award; it must be used for the term listed on your application.

Student eligibility requirements: In order to be considered for this grant, an applicant must:

  • Have an established interest in Jewish Studies (as evidenced by enrollment in Jewish Studies and Jewish Studies-related courses) and a continuing interest in Jewish Studies (as evidenced by plans for further study in this area).
  • Be in the process of applying, or have already applied to, a study abroad program. Proof of acceptance must be provided to the Study Abroad Office, or the student must have an articulated research plan and institutional contacts necessary to conduct it, before funds are released.
  • Be a full time UofSC student
  • Be earning at least three credits for his/her study abroad or research experience
  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum undergraduate 3.0 GPA or graduate 3.5 GPA

Education abroad program requirements: While the UofSC study abroad website lists a number of pre-approved study abroad programs, there are only a few pre-approved programs in Israel.  View the list of pre-approved programs from Jewish Studies. Students wishing to take part in a program that does not appear on our pre-approved list must contact the Study Abroad Office and speak with an advisor regarding individual program  or research plan approval. All students pursuing education abroad in Israel will also have to complete a destination of risk petition, which is also facilitated by the Study Abroad Office. Both credit-bearing service learning and internship programs that include structured, on-site supervision also meet program requirements.

The following types of programs meet requirements for the purpose of applying for a Jewish Studies Study Abroad/Research Travel Grant:

  • Education abroad programs sponsored by an Israeli university or program provider that include topics related to Jewish Studies
  • Direct enrollment in an Israeli institution to study topics related to Jewish Studies
  • Appropriate internship programs related to Jewish Studies.

*Approved topics of study include (but are not limited to):

  • Courses in Jewish history, culture, religion, philosophy, art, or music;
  • Study in Israel of: Middle East politics; history of Israel; Hebrew; Arabic; and other languages; and
  • Other study abroad activities that the Jewish Studies Program deems appropriate.

Grant disbursement: You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline. The actual grant funds are disbursed at the start of your term abroad, depending on your term in Israel. In order to access the funds, you will need to apply the award to your student account.  Proof of acceptance into your study abroad program must be provided to the Study Abroad Office before funds are released.

How to apply: 

  • Complete Jewish Studies Study Abroad-Research Travel Grant Application
  • Submit Academic Reference (to be filled out by a core or consulting Jewish Studies faculty member)
  • Upload Financial Aid Award Letter
  • Upload unofficial academic transcript

What the award is for: Established through a generous donation by the Krammer Family, the Krammer Award is a financial award of $1000 to be used to help cover expenses incurred by taking part in the Wirtschaftsüniversität-Wien (WU) International Business Global exchange program in Vienna, Austria. One award is given each academic year.

Deadline: You must apply during the fall semester prior to the spring semester you plan to pursue education abroad. You can apply for the award multiple times; however you can only receive the award once. You cannot delay the award; it must be used for the semester listed on your application.

Student eligibility requirements: In order to be considered for the Krammer Award, an applicant must:

  • Be in the process of applying, or have already applied, to the Wirtschaftsüniversität Wien (WU) IBUS Global Exchange Program at UofSC (acceptance must be determined before funds are released)
  • Be a full time, undergraduate UofSC-Columbia International Business student
  • Be studying abroad during the required junior year, spring semester for the International Business major
  • Be earning at least twelve credits for his/her study abroad experience
  • Be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Award disbursement: You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline. The actual award funds are disbursed at the start of the spring semester during which you will be studying abroad. In order to access the funds, you will need to apply the award to your student account. Because you are taking part in a UofSC program, the award will be applied toward your tuition costs. Any remainder will be issued to you in the form of an overage check. Please note that you are responsible for covering any deposits or payments due before the disbursement of the award.

How to apply: The Krammer Award Application must be submitted online to the Study Abroad Office by October 5.  In order to apply for a scholarship online, you must have already applied for a program online. Below is a checklist of requirements for the Krammer Award application:

  • Complete all required steps and submit application online
  • Upload your unofficial academic transcript
  • Upload your Financial Aid Award Letter   

What the grant is for: The Passport Travel Grant is a financial award of up to $1500 to be used to help fund a Maymester or summer study abroad experience for Capstone, Honors, and Top Scholar students.

For 2021 programs, this award is only available for Capstone students. Honors students should contact the Honors College directly about funding available for study abroad programming. Students can email Kevin Metcalf at kevin@sc.edu for more information. 

Deadline: All applications are due by November 15. You can apply for the award multiple terms; however you can only receive the award once. You cannot defer the award; it must be used for the term listed on your application. Late applications will not be considered. Please note that recipients of Beyond Boundaries cannot also receive the Passport Travel Grant. 

Student eligibility requirements: In order to be considered for a Passport Travel Grant, an applicant must:

  • Fall into the following category:
      • Capstone Scholar in good standing or approved Capstone Fellow
  • Be in the process of applying to an approved Maymester/summer study abroad
  • Be a full-time, undergraduate USC student
  • Be earning at least three credits for your study abroad experience
  • Be in good academic standing with at least a 3.0 GPA

Grant disbursement: You will receive notification of your award within a few weeks of the application deadline.  The actual award funds are disbursed at the start of the summer term, depending on your program dates.  In order to access the funds, you will need to go to my.sc.edu and apply the award to your student account.  

If you are taking part in a UofSC Global Classroom Program, the award will be applied toward your tuition costs.  Any remainder will be issued to you in the form of an overage check.  If you are taking part in a Global Direct Summer or Global Partner Program, an overage check will be issued to you after funds have been applied to any outstanding balance you may have on your account.  The overage check will be sent to your permanent address. Please note that you are responsible for submitting the T-1 form to the Financial Aid Office and for covering any deposits or payments due before the disbursement of the scholarship.

How to apply: Your application will be evaluated based on the quality of your essays and your academic merit. The following items must be submitted by the application deadline:
