The United Kingdom is an expensive place to study abroad due to the weak dollar against the strong pound. Due to this fact, students need to budget accordingly and be aware that prices will be much higher while in the UK.
At BU, students study 3 courses (units) per semester, each unit worth 10 ECTS. Students typically earn 15 credit hours per semester. These classes are taken from the same program/course and level/year. Compulsory units must be studied and, where units can be chosen, these are clearly marked.
Students should review the individual units under each program and year to find at least 3 courses that would apply to their studies.
To see courses UofSC students have taken at this university, please reference the Registrar's Course Equivalency Table.
The International Office organizes several events specifically for international students, including weekend trips to various parts of the UK once a month. Students also have the opportunity for individual travel, and with its central location and good train and bus links, Bournemouth is an excellent base from which to explore the rest of the UK as well as Europe.
Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Study Abroad Office for more details.
University accommodation is guaranteed at Bournemouth for all exchange students who apply before the deadlines (mid-August for Fall; December for Spring). International students are given priority providing that the students meet the deadlines. Students can live in rented houses, residence halls or the student village depending on wants and needs. Prices vary on the types of accommodation.
Classes begin in September and end in December for Fall students, and classes begin in January and end in May or early June for the spring semester.
Bournemouth offers a one day orientation in both Fall and Spring semesters for all incoming students.
Students who attend Bournemouth University for one semester (less than 6 months) do not need to apply for a visa in advance. You will receive a Student Visitor visa at the airport. Students studying for the full academic year will need to apply for the PBS Tier Four General Student visa. Please contact the Study Abroad Office if you have questions.
