Chalmers University of Technology

Area: Global Exchange
Location: Gothenburg
Country: Sweden
Term: Spring, Fall, Academic Year

UofSC's exchange program at Chalmers University of Technology is designed to help American students gain first hand knowledge of Swedish culture. The program is located in Gothenburg, Sweden's second largest city. Gothenburg (or Goteborg) lies on the western coast of Sweden, and Denmark is easily accessible by ferry. Situated near the Baltic coast, the area is well known for its engineering skills and entrepreneurial spirit.

Students will attend Chalmers University of Technology which is located in the centre of Gothenburg. Students attend classes with Swedish and other exchange students from around the world in areas including engineering, entrepreneurship and sciences.

Cost: UofSC resident tuition rates + in-country costs

Requirements: 3.0 GPA

As a smaller city in Sweden, students will find Gothenburg is more affordable than Stockholm. Students should plan to budget 7300 SEK a month including housing costs. Students pay in-state tuition and fees to UofSC.

Full-time study at Chalmers equals two courses per period (four courses per semester). Most courses that are open for exchange students are on advanced level and require prerequisites in that certain field of study.

Students have the opportunity to meet local students through the Chalmers Student Union.  There is also plenty of room for individual travel as well as excursions organized through the program. Gothenburg's great location makes travel to places like Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen very easy. Golf, skiing, backpacking and canoeing are ideal pastimes in this lush green country.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Study Abroad Office for more details.

University housing is not guaranteed and students might be required to secure temporary housing until their student accommodation is available. Chalmers has a suggested list of housing agencies to use and recommend securing housing as soon as you are accepted to the program.

Chalmers' academic calendar is different than UofSC's; the fall semester goes from mid August to mid January. The spring semester extends from mid-January to early June.

During the first week of every semester, Gothenburg organizes a welcome day for the international students, which is obligatory. This day contains a number of activities such as an introduction to the Swedish language and culture, study visits, presentations of the student unions, and other important organizations at the school.

Students that attend Chalmers for a semester or for an academic year are required to obtain a Swedish visa prior to departure. The Swedish visa can be applied for online.
