It is important for USC students applying to SJTU to note that they may not receive acceptance materials and communication directly from SJTU until close to the end of the UofSC fall semester. Students applying to SJTU should anticipate a very independent exchange program, and will experience an authentic Chinese university experience.

While the cost of living in China is typically lower than in the US, Shanghai is a large, cosmopolitan city, so students need to plan accordingly. Meals on or near campus average 8-40 RMB, and SJTU estimates that students should need approximately 1000-1400 RMB per month for living expenses in addition to housing costs (meals, entertainment, transportation, etc).
Students typically earn 15 credit hours per semester. Courses may be offered on the Fahua campus, or on a different SJTU campus. It is important for students to note that the language of instruction (English or Chinese) may not be finalized until the start of the semester. To see courses UofSC students have taken at this university, please reference the Registrar's Course Equivalency Table.
SJTU may offer organized excursions, and students have the opportunity for individual travel. SJTU offers a variety of sports facilities on the Minhang campus, including stadiums, gymnasiums, tennis, and badminton. SJTU offers an International Student Council which organizes events and fosters community among international students and locals. There are over 160 student associations on campus, in the areas of politics/economics, charity, academics, culture/art, and sports.
Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Study Abroad Office for more details.
SJTU offers on-campus housing on the Minhang and Xuhui campuses, but not on the Fahua campus (where courses at the Antai College of Economics and Management are held). Students may live on-campus and commute to Fahua, or may choose to live off-campus. SJTU recommends that students live on the Xuhui campus, as it is closer to Fahua. SJTU offers limited off-campus housing assistance. Housing on the Xihui campus ranges from 4250-11900 RMB per semester, plus utilities.
SJTU works on the Chinese university calendar. Classes begin in September and end in January for the fall semester. In the spring, classes begin in February and end in late June (the exact dates vary each year based on Chinese New Year). UofSC IB students will attend SJTU during the spring semester.
SJTU does not offer arrival assistance for students. SJTU does offer a mandatory orientation session for students upon arrival in Shanghai.
Students who attend SJTU for a semester (less than six months) are required to obtain a Chinese "F" student visa prior to departure, and applications must be submitted in person to the Chinese Embassy in DC (South Carolina falls within the DC Embassy jurisdiction). Students may also wish to use a visa processing agency, who can submit the visa application on behalf of the student.
