Universidad Francisco de Vitoria

Area: Global Exchange
Location: Madrid
Country: Spain
Term: Spring, Fall, Academic Year

UofSC's Global Exchange program in Spain is designed to expose students to the life and culture of the Spanish people. This program is located in Pozuelo de Alarcón, a western suburb of Madrid, Spain's capital city. Madrid has a vibrant nightlife, great shopping, fantastic tapas bars and cafes, and numerous cultural and historical attractions. Study abroad students participating in this program will also be able to enjoy Madrid's many festivals, beautiful parks and gardens, and museums and art galleries that are arguably among the finest in the world.

Participants will attend the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (UFV), an institution known for the strength of its academic programs, particularly in the fields of journalism, business, and visual communications. Students take part in a four week intensive language and cultural immersion program prior to attending standard university classes alongside Spaniards and other international students. This immersion program is designed to increase students' language proficiency and knowledge of Spanish culture; it eases students' transition into Spanish life while allowing them to complete major/minor coursework in Spanish. Included in this program are several excursions to places of cultural and historical significance.

Cost: UofSC resident tuition rates + in-country costs

Requirements: minimum 3.0 GPA, 1 or more 300-level Spanish course or equivalent capability

Students pay tuition to UofSC because this is a Global Exchange program. You will be billed for mandatory CISI insurance at a rate of $30/month. In addition, you will need to pay for housing in Madrid, which can vary depending on which accommodation you choose. Plan to budget for airfare, accommodation, living expenses, personal expenses, and textbooks.

The majority of courses offered are taught in Spanish, but courses taught in English are available for Business and International Relations. Please note that programs cannot be mixed, and students must register for courses belonging to their specific area of study per UFV's course registration policy.

To see courses UofSC students have taken at this university, please reference the Registrar's Course Equivalency Table

While the exchange program does not provide for organized excursions, there are many student organizations that students can get involved with and which may include travel in their activities.

Students who are interested in language acquisition can sign up for an intensive Spanish language program prior to the start of the Fall semester. In addition, if you would like to be paired with a buddy during your time at UFV, you can sign up for the Buddy Program.

Per university policy, all UofSC students will be charged emergency medical, evacuation and repatriation insurance for their time abroad. Contact the Study Abroad Office for more details.

UFV does not have a hosting service. However, the International Relations Office has useful information that could help you to locate housing. The most economical option is to rent a flat with other students (between 350 and 500 euros, not including expenses). The most economical thing is to rent a flat shared with other students (between 400 and 500 euros excluding expenses - water, electricity, etc.). The options are diverse: single rooms with or without ensuite bathroom, full-floor rental, families, student residences, etc. Our recommendation is to contact Citylife Madrid that will help you in everything related to your stay, even before arriving in Madrid (accommodation, bank account, transportation, mobile hiring, Internet, etc.)

The official school year and mandatory orientation begin in early September, with the Fall semester concluding early January. The Spring semester commences mid-January and concludes mid-May.

Mandatory orientation for all international students will take place upon arrival to UFV.

Students who attend UFV for a semester or academic year are required to obtain a Spanish visa. Students must appear in person at the Spanish consulate or embassy. The Spanish consulate in Miami, FL is the closest consulate to South Carolina. Planning ahead is vital. Please contact the Study Abroad Office for information on the Spanish visa process.
