Several changes designed to enhance the library experience for the USC community have taken place over the summer at Thomas Cooper Library.
Most notably, the library’s entrance has been renovated to include a large new central information desk flanked by turnstiles that will both speed the process of entering and exiting Thomas Cooper and increase safety in the building.
What to know about the new entrance:
- The new front desk will be staffed by libraries employees who can answer questions and provide directions as library users enter the building.
- Students, faculty, and staff will scan their CarolinaCard as they enter the turnstiles; the gates will open automatically.
- Visitors not affiliated with USC will register using a driver’s license or government issued ID card.
- USC affiliates: Please remember your CarolinaCard!
Other updates include a new laptop and portable charger kiosk, an inclusive, all-gender restroom, and self-checkout service.
- The laptop and charger kiosk is located on the west wall of the main level. Students may use their CarolinaCard to borrow laptops and portable chargers for up to four hours.
- The all-gender restroom, opening in October, is located on the main level, next to the men’s room.
- Self-checkout is available via an app on your phone or the self-checkout station on the new information desk. Find the app in the app store for your device by searching for “USC Library.” Once it’s installed, all you need to do is enter your network ID and password to be able to check out materials using your phone.
- While self-checkout is now available any time the library is open, the checkout desk will be staffed Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Materials borrowed through PASCAL or Interlibrary Loan will only be available for pickup during those hours.
