Faculty Accomplishments 2020 - 2021

Spring 2021

  • Her piece “On the Spectrum” was accepted and performed by the Boulder International Fringe Festival in Colorado. 
  • Received an artist’s project grant from the South Carolina Arts Commission for my installation piece “The Intersection Between Mark Making and Mark Leaving.” The grant assisted with expenses related to the production of this piece.
  • On April 7, Fran was recognized as “artist of the day” by the National Association of Women Artists (#NAWAArtistOfTheDay!). Congrats to Fran whose work continues

  • Leigh Pate and Ann Scott did a virtual presentation for a Sigma Theta Tau International conference this month with another CON faculty member Joan Creed. The theme of the conference was Creating Healthy Work Environments and we presented and submitted a virtual oral presentation about Leadership in Academia During a Pandemic. Below is the citation.

  • A manuscript  was accepted for publication to the Journal of Nursing Education in the education innovation section of the journal. We wrote about our experience during the initial start of the pandemic and how we transitioned from a F2F model to virtual online in a 2 week period (this included all clinical experiences as well). We also discussed how students were still successful with graduation, passing boards, and progressing in the program. Here is the citation below.

  • Sarah is the winner of the inaugural South Carolina Academy of Science Two-Year Institution Teacher of the Year Award. Dr. Sellhorst is a Professor of Exercise Science at USC Lancaster. Congratulations, Sarah! This is a well-deserved recognition of Sarah’s excellence as USCL teacher, scholar, and mentor!

  • Study on spatial microstructure in metal laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing ( April 2021) presented online ( North Carolina and Southern section of American society) at Mercer University.

USCL Rise Grant Recipients

Congratulations to the following faculty members who earned RISE grants during this recent cycle:

  1. Li Cai, New Synthesis of a Monophosphoryl Lipid A (MPLA) Derivative.

Fall 2020

  • Dr. Brooke Bauer is spending the 2020-2021 academic year serving as the Andrew W. Mellon Native American Scholars Initiative (NASI) Post-Doctoral Fellow at the American Philosophical Society (APS) in Philadelphia. The NASI is a prestigious Mellon fellowship that is only open to Native American Scholars, and Dr. Bauer was the first and only scholar chosen this academic year.
  • Professor Adam Biggs was recently consulted by a reporter at The New York Times and subsequently quoted in the reporter’s article entitled “Pediatrics Group Offers ‘Long Overdue’ Apology for Racist Past” published on August 20, 2020.
  • Dr. Li Cai was recently notified of the acceptance for publication of an essay in the Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry. USC Lancaster students Khali and Layla both worked on this article project in Summer 2019 before transferring to Columbia, and they are listed as co-authors.
  • Courtney Catledge co-authored a paper in American Nurse: “Obstructive sleep apnea in adults.” This research project took place at MUSC Lancaster. 

Fran Gardner's Group Exhibitions - all juried

  • Fran Gardner’s piece titled Alpha-Beta won first place in the juried exhibition, Small Chapters, at Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head, SC. The exhibit honors the life and work of Pat Conroy and is sponsored by the National Association of  Women Artists South Carolina Chapter, and the Pat Conroy Literary Center. The show runs now through November 30, 2020.
  • Fran Gardner has five pieces accepted for the exhibit  Textile Impact at the Anderson Arts Center in Anderson, SC. This exhibit showcases “a range of textile works highlighting the diversity of processes, materials, and presentation within this wide medium and industry. Honoring Anderson County’s rich history with the textile industry, the intended impact of the exhibition is to expand our audience’s idea of what textiles can be. The show will be open from December 8, 2020- January 28, 2021. 
  • Some Like it Hot, National Association of Women Artists SC Chapter, includes artists from SC, FL and MA (online only) opened in August and still accessible online
  • 131st Members Exhibition, National Association of Women Artists, includes artists from across the United States (online only but traditionally held in New York) October 2020
  • Small Chapters, Coastal Discovery Museum in Hilton Head, SC, and National Association of Women Artists SC Chapter, includes SC artists only (face to face through November 30th and online) I won FIRST PLACE in this exhibition. October 2020
  • Inspirational Journeys, The Vendue Art Hotel in Charleston, SC and National Association of Women Artists SC Chapter, includes artists from all NAWA chapters (face to face through November 30th and online) October 2020
  • Several of Professor Lisa Hammond’s poems have been published and recognized for their excellence. Her poem “Hydrangeas” was selected from more than 400 submissions as the winner of the Saluda River Prize for Poetry from the Jasper Project and will be published in Fall Lines later this year. The poem and an interview with Dr. Hammond was featured on the Jasper Project blog, and also included a new poem, “Elizabeth Warren Dreams of Kissing Babies.” Her poem “many moons” was chosen by the Poet Laureate of the City of Columbia to be published in the booklet, Poetry on the COMET: Write on Time, and featured on buses on the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority. In addition, her poem “To a Son Leaving Home for College” was published this summer in Sheltered: South Carolina Artists Respond During the 2020 Pandemic.
  • Ernest Jenkins narrated a PBS Charlotte episode in its Trail of History series focused on Lancaster.

Professor Chris Judge coauthored a paper entitled “Wateree Bug Ceramic Motif” which was published in Legacy (The South Carolina Institute of Archeology and Anthropology), 8-11. The paper examines the possible origin and cultural significance of images of the bug on ceramic vessels.

  • Dana Lawrence, with Amy L. Montz, edited a collection: Adaptation in Young Adult Novels: Critically Engaging Past and Present (Bloomsbury Academic)--published this month (University of Southern Indiana).
  • Patrick Lawrence has been awarded a contract by Fordham University Press for his book manuscript Obscene Gestures: Counter-Narratives of Sex and Race in the Twentieth Century.

The 2020 Red Rose Festival concluded with a classical music concert featuring Erin Moon-Kelly (Adjunct  and Hunter Cox at First United Methodist Church in Lancaster, SC. Ms. Moon-Kelly performed with a product called a Wind defender (a device placed on the flute headjoint that keeps the droplets and the air inside the headjoint leaving only the sound to go out into the audience). To accommodate her concert patrons who for various reasons could not attend, Ms. Moon-Kelly recorded the performance.

Ms. Moon-Kelly is the principal piccolo player of the Charlotte Concert Band.  The band’s 1st two virtual concerts were published on YouTube in June and July of 2020.

2020 New Faculty Academy Award

Awarded by Center of Teaching Excellence co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the Office of Research, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion to selected new faculty members each year

  • Professor Brittany Taylor-Driggers has been notified that two of her pieces, Garden and Bubble of Protection, were selected for the national juried poetry and art publication KAKALAK 2020 by Main Street Rag Publishing. One of the pieces, Garden, was selected for an honorable mention award. This is the first year the publication’s call for artwork and poetry was disseminated nationally.
