Dr. Wei-Kai (Bryan) Lai, Professor of Mathematics and Division Chair of Math, Sciences, and Professional Studies, has been honored with the 2026 Distinguished Research Service Award from the USC Office of the Vice President for Research at the University of South Carolina.

This award recognizes Dr. Lai’s commitment to the USC research community, specifically his consistent service as a reviewer and mentor for internal funding and awards programs. His dedication ensures that our research initiatives meet the highest standards and continue to grow faculty funding competitiveness across the entire USC system.

"Dr. Lai’s commitment to our research community at USC Salkehatchie is truly exemplary," Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs Dr. Sarah Miller said. "His tireless service as a reviewer and mentor, in addition to his own teaching, research, and mentorship,  ensures that our faculty can pursue their work with the highest standards. We are incredibly proud to see him receive this well-deserved recognition."

Dr. Lai joined the USC Salkehatchie faculty in 2009. In addition to this award, he received Palmetto College awards for excellence in teaching (2013), research (2018), and service (2021).  Dr. Lai regularly mentors students who share their research at regional, state, and national conferences. He serves as the advisor for the international club and academic advisor for all engineering and mathematics majors.
