Steven Powell grew up in Blacksburg, Va., a college town located in the mountains in the southwestern part of the state. After attending Penn State for two years, he transferred to the College of William and Mary, graduating in 1989 with dual concentrations in chemistry and English literature.

He worked as a copy editor at Science magazine and a book editor for the American Chemical Society before earning a doctoral degree in organic chemistry from Duke University. He was a freelance science writer and editor in Durham, N.C., before joining USC’s News and Internal Communications office in 2011.
