Accident, Incident & Near Miss Reporting

Emergency scenarios can arise in workplaces and work settings all around campus. Learn how to respond and report incidents in compliance with university standards.

In Case of a work related injury

If you have an injury, seek necessary medical care then contact Buddy Harley,  right away at 803-528-8191. He will coordinate any required incident reporting to SC OSHA.

  • For any fatality that occurs within 30 days of a work-related incident, the university must report the event to SC OSHA within eight hours.
  • For any in-patient hospitalization, amputation or eye loss that occurs within 24 hours of a work-related incident, the university must report the event within 24 hours.

Workers’ Compensation

In general, all employees of the University of South Carolina who are paid through the university payroll system are covered by workers’ compensation. Any accidental injury or occupational disease sustained by employees in the course of performing their job duties may be covered.

Steps To Take When An Injury Occurs

  1. For non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses, in which medical treatment my be necessary, the supervisor and injured employee together will immediately call CompEndium Services (available 24/7) at 877-709-2667 to report the injury. If a supervisor is not available, another supervisor or HR Contact may assist the injured employee with this process.

    Note: In case of a life-threatening injury or illness, dial 911 or go to the nearest emergency room and contact your supervisor and CompEndium as soon as possible.

  2. CompEndium will assist in processing and scheduling the employee’s work-related injury for treatment and claims handling with the university’s insurance provider.

  3. CompEndium will direct the injured employee to a medical provider for treatment. They will also issue a treating authorization number to the medical provider, which will authorize treatment of the injured employee.
