      What's On A Label?

All chemical manufacturers are required to label their products properly.  Labels on all chemical containers in your work area must supply the following information:

bullet2.gif (950 bytes) The NAME of the chemical.  If the product contains more than one chemical, all the chemical ingredients must be listed.

bullet2.gif (950 bytes) A WARNING of the hazards associated with the product.  Sometimes, the warning will be in the form of a symbol or sign (which we will learn about later).  Warnings can also be expressed in words.  Some commonly warnings found on labels are:

DANGER can cause serious injury or death
WARNING cause cause potentially serious injury or death
CAUTION can cause potentially moderate injury

bullet2.gif (950 bytes) The NAME and ADDRESS of the manufacturer or importer.

Next, we will look at several signs and symbols commonly found on container labels, and learn what each symbol means.  We will divide the harmful properties of chemicals into two types:  PHYSICAL HAZARDS and HEALTH HAZARDS.

      First, let's discuss physical hazards.
