First part of an introductory course sequence. Topics include mechanics, and selections from wave motion, sound, fluids, and heat. No previous background in physics is assumed.
Course Description Changes: Wording change. No content change.
Prerequisite Changes: Updating math prerequisites to reflect better the required student preparation for the class. Previous prerequisites leave the impression that any MATH equivalent Carolina Core SCI course is a prerequisite, which is not the case. "Carolina Core SCI" in the old description describes the fact that PHYS201 is a CC SCI course. This designation has nothing to do with the course prerequisites and is removed in the new description of course prerequisites.
As per request by departmental undergraduate committee chair.
In phone and e-mail consultation with Jeff Wilson (PHYS), updated wording of new prerequisite. The message they want to get across is that students either need to be qualified for calculus (MATH 122 or 141) or should have a C or better (or exam credit) for a calculus course.
As this course change proposal is not changing the content of the course in any way, just refining Bulletin Description and pre-requisite, no syllabus is needed. DBM (3 April 2017)
