An examination of African-American cultures
This brief memo is to provide a justification for our effort to renumber a series of courses in our undergraduate curriculum. The Department of Anthropology has undertaken a major review of our courses, which were concentrated at the 300-level, with a view to 1) making certain courses appear more welcoming to first and second year students, and 2) realigning their numbers in relation to the level of instruction in the courses. This renumbering also will enable us to seek the listing of a number of these courses as Carolina Core foundational offerings. In sum, this new renumbering is designed to make the overall Anthropology curriculum more accessible and welcoming to undergraduate students, as well as more rational in terms of student and faculty expectations. We believe that this will improve our offerings for the College, and will deliver to USC students a range of anthropology courses that would be extremely valuable for their intellectual development at a wider range of offering levels.
explain New World
The newly-provided syllabus introduced a number of issues, none of which are major but do need to be addressed prior to moving this proposal further in the approval process.
The syllabus indicates ANTH 303 is cross-listed with AFAM 303. This needs to be reflected in the information about the course that is entered in APPS. Is the cross-listing to be continued? Does the AFAM course need a similar renumbering? Regardless of these answers, there needs to be a parallel CCP for AFAM 303 to reflect that it's now equivalent with ANTH 231 (or that the cross-listing needs to be deleted). The details of the AFAM 303 proposal will be essentially the same as what's already in ANTH 303; this should not take long to complete, once you know what changes are neede. Mutual letters of concurrence from AFAM and ANTH would be nice; these can be simple e-mails pasted into the appropriate place in APPS.
Other issues with the syllabus:
KC Kirasic and I stand ready to answer any questions that you might have, and to quickly process the revised proposal(s) when they are submitted.
KC KIrasic has explained that a proposal form the cross-listed course, AFAM 303, is not needed. There is an understanding that the Registrar will administratively update AFAM 303's cross-listing from ANTH 303 to ANTH 231.
Thank you for your patience.
