The MUSC 498—Music Practicum course has existed since the 2000-2001 academic year. The course has been used successfully in a variety of settings, as was intended.
Student participation in internships and service-learning experiences is growing. Many of these experiences require significant commitments of time and effort. The current course is fixed at one credit hour, a level that is inappropriately low for some experiences. A newly-proposed minor in Music Industry Studies includes a two-credit requirement for MUSC 498. Making the MUSC 498 course into a variable credit course (1-3) will satisfy both of these present needs.
