At present, we have two prerequisites (6 hours) for our major that do not count toward major hours. This is a barrier to students who want to change majors and prohibitive for those who would double-major, as many of our majors do. WGST 111 does not satisfy any requirement within the Carolina Core. WGST 112 fulfills VSR and GSS in the Carolina Core and WGST 112 (the other prerequisite) can also serve as the necessary introduction to and the sole prerequisite for the major.
I have consulted with Chris Nesmith by phone and email. The only small issue he foresaw was that one instructor who regularly teaches WGST 111 may need to find another WGST course to teach. I do not see this as a problem.
