Initially, this course is being proposed and developed to meet the needs of undergraduate students enrolled in the College of Nursing’s RN to BSN program who must satisfy Carolina Core foreign language competency. Nursing’s RN to BSN program will help nurses holding AND degrees and licensure in South Carolina (especially in underserved areas of the state) matriculate to earn baccalaureate degrees in nursing.
The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures intends to offer SPAN 109 to general populations of students at USC beginning Fall 2017. Given scheduling problems that some students face and classroom space capacity issues, it is not only practical but essential to offer more foreign language courses in distributed learning formats.
Additionally, many undergraduate students face career and family constraints and are unable to enroll in courses scheduled during traditional hours. These students need options to enroll in foreign language courses that are not restricted by time and place. Offering SPAN 109 in compressed, distributed learning format will greatly benefit students who wish to complete a Carolina Core requirement and ultimately earn baccalaureate degrees at USC.
The removal of "Fall and Summer I only." is an additional administrative change necessitated by recent changes to USC's scheduling and increased use of distance learning format.

Lastly: can you change "Changes to Course Delivery Only" to something more explicit like: "Existing course being adapted to online delivery. No change in content."

Patti, congratulations SPAN 109 and SPAN 110 were both conditionally approved at our InDEV Committee meeting on Friday, September 30, 2016. However, a few edits must be made before full approval can be provided.
Below are the comments on both SPAN 109 & 110 from the INDEV Committee. If you have any questions, just let me know.
The course has been returned to you in Academic Programs Proposal System (APPS). Since this is an existing course and you are just adding distributed learning (DL), it only needs to go to Faculty Senate for approval after INDEV. Therefore, the syllabus must be edited and placed back in APPS and electronically approved by your (1) Department chair, (2) Steve Adams, and (3) your college representative. It is a good idea to email your department chair, Steve Adams and your college representative when you submit your edited proposal so that they are aware that the proposal is coming to them once again for approval. Once your college representative approves it electronically, it will be back in the INDEV queue so I can approve and forward it to Faculty Senate.
It would be best if you could get this all done by early October so that it may move forward through the process. Again, if you have questions, just ask.

Please make the following changes and then complete the process to have your course approved again at each level described in the above email.
1. Please clarify the criteria for a pass/fail grade.
2. Please add a % sign in the grading scale.
3. Videos that the students watch, even if it is a lecture, should be listed as Student-Content interaction (and not Student-Instructor interaction).
4. Please also specify in your syllabus how tests and quizzes will be secured, e.g. through Blackboard and password protected, etc.
