As part of the continuous assessment and improvement process associated with accreditation of the Biomedical Engineering Program by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), faculty within the program have undertaken a comprehensive review and revision of the undergraduate curriculum and approved (September 28, 2016) several course changes. These changes, which are based upon input from senior course reviews and exit interviews, include modifications to the sequencing of coursework, course pre- and co-requisites, learning outcomes, and course descriptions.
Specifically, two new 2-credit laboratory courses, BMEN 381 and BMEN 382, have been added to the curriculum to integrate the program's laboratory component. The prior curriculum had three courses with minor laboratory components (BMEN 260, BMEN 271, and BMEN 321) and one course with a major laboratory component (BMEN 361). By combining these individual components into a dedicated 2-course (2 credits each) series, the new curriculum continues to translate lecture materials into hands on exercises while additionally integrating topics from multiple courses into single experiments. In particular, BMEN 381 will integrate concepts from biomaterials and biomechanics as well as cell and molecular biology. In addition, this laboratory format facilitates a more orchestrated effort for instruction in proper laboratory notebook documentation and communication of experimental results. Finally, it moves all programmatic laboratory components into the junior year to permit the focus of laboratory resources toward students that are more advanced within the curriculum.
The course description details the key laboratory practices that will be emphasized as well as the topical focus on biomaterials and biomechanics, and the learning outcomes reflect the anticipated mastery of these experimental components.
