This course is of high interest as a general elective and is part of the core course requirements for students pursuing a bachelor's degree with a major or minor in Criminology and Criminal Justice. We propose expanding the delivery format to make CRJU 313 available to students on-line. The flexibility of an asynchronous on-line format will provide needed flexibility for Columbia campus students, and it will make the course accessible to students at the Regional Campuses and those enrolled in Palmetto College. The course materials and pedagogy incorporate basic accessibility features, provide for appropriate learning activities, and allow for appropriate interaction.
Good afternoon. Thank you for providing and the syllabus an excellent description of technology requirements students will need in this course. Can you please add a statement in the Provisions for Course Content Interactions section a statement about ADA/accessibility of course content? I realize you might have not been asked to provide this in the past, but the university and faculty committees are paying much more attention to making courses accessible to students with disabilities. You can simply add to the Provisions for Course Content Interactions section (not in the syllabus) a statement regarding accessibility of course material. Here are a couple of model statements you can modify or use verbatim:
Statement 1The professor will meet with an instructional designer at the Center for Teaching Excellence (or department/college ID staff) to ensure that the course materials posted on Blackboard incorporate basic accessibility features. The course syllabus includes an accessibility statement that encourages students with disabilities to register with the Office of Student Disability services; should a student with a registered disability enroll in the course, the professor will work with the Office to make any additional accommodations appropriate to that student’s needs.
Statement 2All documents including syllabus and description of assignments will be provided in both accessible Word and PDF formats. For instance, documents will have proper headings, alternative text, and properly labeled links where necessary. Likewise PowerPoint slides will be made accessible by providing alternative text where necessary, ordering textboxes and other recommended ways of making PPTs accessible. Prerecorded lectures (if a part of the course) will be accompanied with transcripts in accessible Word and PDF formats.

I am approving this so that INDEV can give their input and this course can go through only one more review cycle.
Here are issues that I note:

To: Brandon Applegate:
Brandon, congratulations CRJU 313 was conditionally approved at our InDEV Committee meeting on Thursday, February 23, 2017. However, a few edits must be made before full approval can be provided.
Below are the comments on CRJU 313
from the INDEV Committee. If you have any questions, just let me know.
The course has been returned to you in Academic Programs Proposal System (APPS). Since this is an existing course and you are just adding distributed learning (DL), it only needs to go to Faculty Senate for approval after INDEV. Therefore, the syllabus must be edited and placed back in APPS and electronically approved by your (1) Department chair, (2) Steve Adams, and (3) your college representative. It is a good idea to email your department chair, Steve Adams and your college representative when you submit your edited proposal so that they are aware that the proposal is coming to them once again for approval. Once your college representative approves it electronically, it will be back in the INDEV queue so I can approve and forward it to Faculty Senate.
It would be best if you could get this all done prior to Spring Break so that it may move forward through the process. Again, if you have questions, just ask.

CRJU 313 needs to address the following concerns:
Several of the learning objectives need to be reformulated from "Understand..." to Demonstrate understanding of ..." or "Describe....".
The 600 or 10 hr. long PowerPoint Lecture seems too long and should be subdivided into smaller units that are labeled in the syllabus. The proponent should perhaps transfer more material into the 3rd and 6th weeks which are notably lighter.
Overall the course looks good.

Returning to proponent for revisions based on feedback from INDEV.
