An examination of literature by and about black women, including fiction, poetry, drama, and autobiography. This study will focus on issues that emerge from the creative representations of black women and the intersections of race, gender, sexuality, and class that interrogate what is both particular and universal experiences.
The Department of English requests a new course designation, ENGL 487 on "Black Women Writers." The course has been offered under the special topics designation on several occasions by English faculty members. We would like the course to be permanently added to our curriculum given the value of the subject matter to the discipline and the regularity in which the course is offered.
I gladly endorse the course AFAM/ENGL / WGST 487 – Black Women Writers, and I am delighted that we can cross-list it.Thanks!Ed Madden———Dr. Ed MaddenAssociate Professor of EnglishDirector, Women’s & Gender Studies ProgramJones 109FUniversity of South CarolinaColumbia SC 29208803-777-4008
African American Studies approves the permanent cross-listing of ENGL 487/AFAM 487
Your proposal is being returned for the following reason(s):• There is an indication that this course is cross listed with another course(s). The registrar is requiring that cross listed courses have identical bulletin information, so a proposed change in one cross listed course will impact all cross listed courses. Because of this there needs to be coordination between the departments to make sure that there is agreement by all parties with how these courses will be listed in the bulletin. In all cases we will need to have a letter of concurrence from all cross-listed departments.
If the above concerns are addressed, and the proposal reaches the Curricula and Courses Committee by noon April 19, 2018, it will be approved and included in those courses being recommended to the Faculty Senate for the upcoming Faculty Senate meeting. If the committee receives it after that date, it will be considered during the next Curricula and Courses review cycle Please contact me if you have questions (firstname.lastname@example.org).Sincerely,John GerdesFaculty Senate Committee on Curricula and Courses
There needs to be NCPs for AFAM 487 and WGST 487 submitted concurently.
Your proposal is being returned for the following reason(s):
We are running into a problem processing these courses. We have reviewed ENGL 487 / AFAM 487 / WGST 487. These are proposals for new courses, each cross listed with the other. BUT we only have proposals for ENGL 487 and WGST, and so we cannot approve those without a non-existent course.
One option is to drop the cross listing of AFAM 487, which would allow the other two to move forward. We were told by Dr. Osborne that it would be ok to drop the AFAM cross list. The problem is that only the proponent can modify a cross listing, so that change cannot be done administratively. The only way this can be accomplished is to
Administratively returned to C & C
Thank you for submitting your proposal to the Committee on Curricula & Courses. We have approved the proposal and are moving it forward to the Faculty Senate. It is recommended someone from the department attend the next Faculty Senate meeting in case there are questions from the floor regarding your proposal.
We appreciate your patience and commitment to undergraduate and graduate education.

This proposal was approved through Faculty Senate as of 4/20/19.
At the request of the C & C Chair, the proposals are being administratively returned to the proponent for the addition of the third Cross-listed course, AFAM 487, which is currently in the C & C's queue for approval and meets the criteria for cross-lists with ENGL 487 and WGST 487. This revision has received concurrence from all units. The cross-listed addition can only be changed at the proponent level. To ensure timeliness of the addition of AFAM 487, the Office of Academic Programs will administratively make the edit to include AFAM 487 as a secondary cross-list and approve and forward back to the Faculty Senate's queue.
The proponents have been notified of the administrative edit to add AFAM 487 to the ENGL 487 and WGST 487 proposals.
Course will be added to the 1920 Undergraduate Bulletin.
