Carolina Core SCI
PHYS 153 is an introductory course in light, color and vision. The course teaches the basic principles, concepts, and terms of geometrical optics of reflections and refractions, mirrors and lenses, cameras and photography, the eye and vision, image processing in the eye, depth perception and three-dimensional imaging, color production and color perception, color photography and video, digital photography, wave optics, polarization, and holography. Through problem solving and independent research students learn how to apply the scientific method to model and explain phenomena involving these topics in the context of real-life situations. Students learn about the relationship between physics, technology and science by studying how these concepts are applied in the development of various devices such as photographic cameras, lasers, and holographs. The content of the course is especially useful for majors in media arts, business, and other non-science students.
