The course is structured to help students apply concepts of scientific inquiry in practical business problems in the field of hospitality/tourism, retail, and sport management. This course will provide the student with an understanding of the process and the tools to support business problem identification, research design, information/data collection, data analytics, result visualization, and managerial decision-making of business cases.
In order to keep up with the changing times and more comprehensive needs of the hospitality/tourism, retail, and sport and entertainment industries, the current course description, objectives, and course name and content is being changed and updated to reflect a more broad and practical view of business problem-solving using scientific inquiry and business analytics. Instead of just focusing on research process, the course will provide more real-world business case scenarios on data analytics and result visualization to inform managerial decision and recommendations based on the analysis outcomes. The course will help to provide students with the much needed skills and perspectives in using information from scientific inquiry and the business analytics techniques to solve business problems in the current and future managerial positions in HRSM.
The College of Business has provided a (email) letter of concurrence for the change of course name.

I’m glad saw you today. I had forgotten to follow up on your request.
We have no problem with it. Both Pete and Mark Ferguson were fine with the name change.
Thanks for consulting us.

The College of Hospitality, Retail and Sports Management is going to propose a name change to one of its graduate courses and I wanted to check with you before they moved forward. The course (HRTM 788) is currently called Applied Research in Hospitality, Retail, and Sport Management and they would like to propose to change it to HRTM 788 Applied Business Analytics in Hospitality, Retail, and Sports Management. The course is being revised to focus more on analyzing and interpreting data than conducting research. Please let me know if this change would be acceptable to you and Darla Moore Business School. If you have any questions please let me know.

Friendly amendment suggestion for the final version of the syllabus: Rephrase the learning outcomes to all have action verbs, rather than 'understand' to indicate what students will be able to do to demonstrate mastery of your content.
Update will appear in the 1920 Graduate Bulletin to be published on 2.15.19.
