1. Dual degree students will take foundational methods and functional (cognate) courses at EGADE during their first two semesters in the doctoral program. This includes, but is not restricted to, statistics, quantitative methods, qualitative methods, philosophy of science, economics, and foundations in organizational theory and strategy management.
2. Dual degree students will then matriculate to South Carolina for three semesters. The primary courses taken during this period will be to fulfill the international business requirements, as well as remaining methods and cognate courses to fulfill the doctoral degree course requirements of South Carolina.
3. During the time students are at South Carolina, a paper or research project may be required of dual degree students to fulfill EGADE program requirements. Such an activity(s) will be jointly supervised by faculty from EGADE and South Carolina.
4. Dual degree students return to their home institution and complete their dissertation under the supervision of faculty from both universities.
Faculty Composition of Dissertation Committees:
1. The dissertation may be a single study or may consist of a minimum of three papers. Since dual degree students’ research will be collaboratively supervised between the two institutions, it will be expected that dissertation committees will consist of faculty from both institutions. Each institution’s policies and regulations about faculty membership of dissertation committees will be respected.
2. At South Carolina, the Chair (or Co-chair) of the committee must be a regular member of the graduate faculty. A faculty member from the EGADE may serve as co-chair of the committee, if receiving a term appointment to the Graduate faculty. Faculty members from EGADE may serve as members of the dissertation committee as outside members, with no term appointment being necessary. At least one half of faculty members on the dissertation committee should be from the home institution and with at least one member from the host institution in the other half.
3. At South Carolina, funding for faculty to travel to participate in dissertation committee work is the responsibility of the individual faculty member or department, contingent upon availability of funding. At EGADE, funding for the travels of EGADE’s faculty is provided by its PhD program. A student defending a dissertation shall not be responsible for travel costs of faculty members.
This is a dual degree PhD program between the University of South Carolina, Darla Moore School of Business and EGADE Business School. EGADE is a highly regarded business school in North America and is accredited by AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA. The program structure leverages distinct research and scholarly capabilities of each institution.
The program is designed as a dual degree whereby students pursue degrees at both institutions. Each institution confers its own degree for work done to meet the graduation standards of the doctoral program of that institution. The program will give selected students from both institutions the opportunity to acquire the Ph.D. in Business Administration from USC and the Ph.D. in Business Administration from EGADE.
Dual degree students must meet all eligibility requirements for admission to each doctoral program. Each institution will be the sole judge of whether a student has completed the requirement for the degree that it awards. The intended length of study for the dual degree program is four years (60 credit hours). Dual degree students will spend their first two semesters at EGADE taking foundational courses. They will then spend three semesters at USC taking specialized courses in international business. Dual degree students are required to complete at least 30 hours of credit while enrolled at South Carolina. Up to twelve hours of academic credit from EGADE may be accepted and applied toward the South Carolina Ph.D. degree requirements. Faculty from both institutions will supervise the dissertation.
