Subject: RE: sports
No worries about earlier notice. This really is a nice fit for our students if they can take a few of these classes. As you said, we have several of our students who minor with you all already and we have many minors from your group taking classes with us. These more specialized offerings may create a greater attraction and overlap between our programs. Our department supports your efforts and the added concentration. As the 499 class will be put forth in your proposal rather than a standalone “regular” class on social media, this is fine and does give time to determine what truly works best for our students.
For the social media course (some random thoughts), our SPTE course currently is approved as an online class for graduate and upper level undergraduate students. I spoke to Khalid Ballouli (KB) who created the class and he is open to working with you all to either make sure the two social medial courses do not overlap and are different, or if easier, cross listing the class if both our program needs are met, or creating your class and then cross listing both of our social media classes if they are really two different views/classes on social media and sport. We typically only offer the class online in the summer to about 50 students maximum. I like what you have discussed in your class idea. I am a finance guy, so this is all slightly outside my realm of expertise. KB would be the one to work with on this class as he was the creator of the class we offer. I can link you two if that sounds like a good option.
One other related class/issue from our end that fits somewhere here is one of our special topics courses taught by Grace Yan on media/communication in sport (see attached syllabus). Our department had not done a lot in sport communication prior to Grace arriving. Since your college used to be located down the hall from us, we tended to put our students interested in this side of the business into your minor. Now with Grace here, she created this class and has had a mix of students from the two programs in it. I am not sure where it will fit in the mix, but we are interested in creating this too as a “regular” class and cross listing it with your unit too if desired/needed.
I am free to meet tomorrow after 2:00 if you’d like, or Friday after 11:00.
I really like your ideas and vision for the future. It seems like things are going very well.
