The University of South Carolina owns many federally registered trademarks. Among them are the University's logo and logotype, the Gamecock logo, the Block C with Gamecock logo, and the Cocky logo. Use of registered trademarks without the express permission of the University of South Carolina is a violation of federal and state law. Any business or individual who produces commercial items for public view or consumption must be officially licensed. The policy of the University of South Carolina is to respect the privacy of all Web site visitors to the extent permitted by the law. All official University Web sites, sites that collect online information from visitors and sites that track user actions must notify visitors of their information-collection policy by including a Privacy Statement on their Web site. A feature on several of the University's main pages that allows user to increase the size of the text requires cookies to be downloaded to users' computers. The cookies' sole purpose is to enable the text-size feature to function properly; the cookies do not gather any personal information.
The University of South Carolina requires all new or revised Web pages published or hosted by the University to be in compliance with federal guidelines required by the Rehabilitation Act, Section 508, subsection 1194.22, and standards endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative.
The University of South Carolina welcomes the opportunity and the potential of publishing on the Internet, and so allows and encourages students, staff, and faculty to publish information electronically. University groups and departments may create electronic Web pages that carry out official University business in support of the University's mission. Content of all Web pages must be consistent with the University of South Carolina policies as well as local, state, and federal laws. This includes links to other pages or Web sites. A Web site may be considered in violation if it contains links to a page that violates the policy.
All official University Web sites must follow Web Presence compliance guidelines. The Web Presence Committee provides standard templates and authoring guidelines to assist departments and offices in Web site development. The Web Presence Project was developed to create a uniform "look and feel" for University Web pages.
The Web Communications staff in the office of University Publications is responsible for maintaining the majority of content on the University's home page and pages that are linked off it: Spotlight, Photos, Outreach, Highlights, Carolina Today, About USC, and Apply to USC. The office of Media Relations selects and maintains the Headlines section of the home page and Carolina Today. Announcements on the home page are considered to be of interest to a large general audience beyond the USC community; announcements on Carolina Today are considered to be of interest primarily to the USC community, particularly the Columbia campus.
Announcements and other information may be submitted for consideration to firstname.lastname@example.org, but submission does not guarantee they will be used. Information should continue to be submitted to the University's Announcements listserv (e-mail email@example.com) and the Calendar of Events (e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for access to upload to the Calendar).
