Black Box is a multicultural theatre ensemble that aims to provide an artistic outlet that expresses the influence of African American writers, actors, and artists of the past, present, and future. Furthermore, it intends to manifest the idea of a "New Romanticism." That is to examine and display art centered on issues impacting black communities (sexism, colorism, addiction, violence, homophobia, etc.) without glorifying these problems. In doing so it will combat three ideas sometimes displayed in modern theatre: art is for art's sake (the idea that art is not political); art is only about inner angst; and middle class values and images are the only positive representations.
